Zwolle Bridge
An iconic red link between Zwolle and Hattem that combines a railway line and a cycle highway in a single, ambitious infrastructure project.
The Welling / ZÜBLIN / Donges consortium has constructed the new railway bridge – also known as the Red Bridge or the Red Carpet – across the IJssel between Zwolle and Hattem. The bridge is made of steel and concrete and has been designed as a truss bridge.
The bright red bridge rests on 18 piers and forms a striking link between the two banks of the IJssel. The 925-metre-long bridge accommodates two railway tracks and a cycle path (the Zwolle–Hattem fast cycle route). The span across the river is 150 metres long, with a clearance height of nine metres. Against the backdrop of the landscape, the red bridge contrasts with the green floodplains of the IJssel.
With this new crossing, ZÜBLIN delivered a sustainable, forward-looking and iconic infrastructure project, providing the region with a modern and quieter rail link.
