Zaltbommel Ring Road

N322 Zaltbommel reconstruction: design and implementation of smart infrastructure, new engineering structures and safety measures for all road users.

Commissioned by the Province of Gelderland, ZÜBLIN Nederland, as part of a joint venture, designed and carried out the complete reconstruction of the N322 near Zaltbommel. The project was carried out under a UAV-GC contract and comprised a wide range of infrastructure works, ranging from engineering structures and road surfacing to traffic management systems and site management.

New bridge over the A2:
One of the key elements of the project was the design and construction of a new concrete bridge over the A2. The bridge has a total length of 76.24 metres, spread over four spans, with a maximum clear span of 25.75 metres. The structure was built using precast concrete bridge girders, which ensured an efficient construction method and a rapid construction pace.

Cycle tunnel and underpasses:
Alongside the bridge, a new 125-metre cycle tunnel has been constructed beneath the N322. This tunnel improves road safety and provides an important link for non-motorised traffic in the area.

An existing pile-supported culvert was also extended to a total length of approximately 18.30 metres, with dimensions of 3.0 x 2.0 metres, ensuring that water management in the area continued to function optimally within the new design.

Retaining walls and noise barriers:
Along the route, ZÜBLIN constructed precast concrete retaining walls 85 metres long with a retaining height of 3.0 metres. In addition, a 190-metre-long noise barrier was constructed, also with a height of 3 metres, to protect the surrounding area from traffic noise.

Road surfacing and public spaces:
The project also included:

  • The construction of new road surfaces
  • The implementation of a comprehensive green plan
  • The installation of four traffic control systems
  • The installation of street lighting

A webcam and a counting system were also installed for traffic management purposes.

Site management, permits and V&V:
Under this UAV-GC contract, ZÜBLIN was responsible for the complete design, verification and validation, and permit and stakeholder management. Close coordination with the local community was essential, given the impact on traffic and local infrastructure.
