Windbreaks on the Caland Canal

A sturdy concrete windbreak forming part of the Theemsweg route.

Commissioned by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, ZÜBLIN Civiele Betonbouw constructed a new windbreak along the Caland Canal, including modifications to the adjacent cycle path.
For the construction of the new railway line along the Theemsweg route, several existing elements of the original windbreak had to be removed. To continue to limit the impact of the wind on the canal, ZÜBLIN built a completely new windbreak directly behind the existing one.

The new screen has a total length of 144 metres and consists of 27 semi-circular concrete shells with an external diameter of 4 metres. Measured from the foundation, the structure reaches a height of 24.3 metres. The screen is constructed from in-situ reinforced concrete, resulting in a robust and durable structure.

The windbreak is supported by:

  • 118 screw-in injection piles (Ø 530 mm) with a length of approximately 29 metres
  • A concrete foundation beam 4.00 m wide and 1.25 m high

Concrete shells of 350 mm thick and 4 metres high rest on this foundation beam, on top of which a concrete intermediate beam (4.00 m × 1.25 m) has been placed. On top of this intermediate beam are the tall concrete shells (d=250 mm, height 18.75 metres), which were constructed using the slipform method.

Cycle path modification:
As part of the project, the existing cycle path was also re-routed. This work was carried out by Dijkshoorn Infra BV.
