Porthos

The ZÜBLIN Nederland – Van Boekel Bouw & Infra joint venture has been awarded the contract for the civil engineering works for the compressor station at Porthos, one of Europe’s leading climate projects. This initiative is a collaboration between the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Gasunie and Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN).

A key component of the Porthos infrastructure is the new compressor station on the Maasvlakte. This is where the CO₂ captured by companies such as Shell, ExxonMobil, Air Products and Air Liquide is compressed. The CO₂ is then transported via a pipeline approximately twenty kilometres long to the P18-A offshore platform, where it is injected into former gas fields, three to four kilometres below the seabed.

The civil engineering work for the compressor station is being carried out by Van Boekel Züblin VOF, a joint venture between Van Boekel Bouw & Infra and ZÜBLIN Nederland, acting as a subcontractor to the Italian main contractor Bonatti. The consortium is responsible for the architectural and civil engineering works for several buildings that form the basis for the station’s advanced installations. The work is being carried out to high quality standards and within a tight schedule.

Construction began in 2024. Upon completion, the Porthos system will be able to store approximately 2.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, representing a total capacity of 37 million tonnes. Both the compressor station and the onshore pipeline have been deliberately oversized to accommodate future projects. The station will also be integrated into the Aramis CO₂ transport infrastructure and will form the central hub of the future CO₂ hub in the Port of Rotterdam. The compressor station is therefore an essential part of an innovative, large-scale infrastructure that plays a key role in both the development of the port and the national energy transition.
