Groningen Southern Ring Road

The completion of Ring Zuid and Julianaplein provides a new, future-proof transport link for the city and the region. The execution of this large-scale and complex project took several years and was a real feat for the Herepoort Consortium, in which ZÜBLIN Nederland collaborated with Max Bögl Nederland B.V., Koninklijke Oosterhof Holman, Koninklijke Sjouke Dijkstra and Roelofs.

The result is impressive. The upgraded southern ring road and the junction represent a significant milestone for Groningen. The project not only ensures better traffic flow and improved accessibility between the city and the wider region, but also demonstrably enhances road safety. In addition, the fact that part of the road runs underground near the Zuiderplantsoen contributes to a significant improvement in quality of life.

The ‘Aanpak Ring Zuid’ project has radically modernised Groningen’s southern ring road. This crucial gateway to the city was at risk of becoming increasingly congested due to Groningen’s rapid growth. The large-scale redevelopment has led to clear improvements in terms of accessibility, traffic flow, quality of life and road safety.

A key element of the project is the sunken section of the ring road near the Zuiderplantsoen. This has created space for green areas and better connected the surrounding neighbourhoods, which has significantly enhanced the quality of life in the city.

The southern ring road is approximately twelve kilometres long and runs right through Groningen, from Hoogkerk to Westerbroek. The route plays a key role in both traffic to and from the city and through traffic passing through Groningen.
