The Dafne Schippers Bridge demonstrates how infrastructure can be more than just a link. This iconic cycle and pedestrian bridge connects Utrecht city centre with Leidsche Rijn in a single elegant sweep.
As the contractor, ZÜBLIN AG built the Dafne Schippers Bridge, a unique cycle and pedestrian bridge in Utrecht that combines various functions in a single innovative design. The bridge forms a new link between the historic city centre and the Leidsche Rijn district, and integrates infrastructure, a primary school and a park in a distinctive way.
With a span of 110 metres, the route guides cyclists in an elegant loop over the roof of the adjacent school and then across the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. The bridge has been designed as a slender and refined element within the urban environment, with the braided cables forming a distinctive and recognisable silhouette.
Through the clever dual use of space – combining a bridge, a school and a green park – the Dafne Schippers Bridge has become an icon of sustainable urban development and a daily link for thousands of cyclists. The project demonstrates how innovative infrastructure can contribute to quality of life, connectivity and the efficient use of space in a growing city.
